Overview
Word Hunter and Word Hunter Pocket are local-first language learning apps. They do not require an account and there is no Word Hunter cloud service.
Data stored on your device
The apps store your books, imported texts, vocabulary, translations, notes, review history, settings and reading progress locally on your device.
Transfers and backups
Your data leaves the app only when you export it, for example as a transfer package, a vocabulary export or an Anki file. The file is saved where you choose. If you then keep it in a cloud storage service, that service's privacy terms apply.
Optional online features
Some features contact third-party services, and only when you use them:
- public catalog search and book downloads (Project Gutenberg, Wikipedia, Wikinews), web article import and YouTube caption import;
- online dictionaries, online translation and image search;
- online text-to-speech providers;
- AI explanations, if you turn them on – the word and its sentence are sent to the endpoint you configure.
The text, word, query or address needed for that feature is sent to the service you selected.
Update check
When it starts, the desktop app asks the GitHub API which Word Hunter release is the latest. The request identifies only the app and its version; none of your books, words or settings are sent. GitHub may log the request under its own privacy statement. You can turn the check off in the update dialog and check manually in Settings at any time.
Advertising and tracking
Word Hunter contains no advertising and no analytics or telemetry.
Children
Word Hunter is a general language-learning tool and is not directed at children. The apps do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Deleting your data
You can remove books and vocabulary inside the app, clear all local data from the app settings, or uninstall the app. If you exported packages or backups, delete those files as well.
This website
This site is hosted on GitHub Pages. To show the newest version number and download links, the download page asks the GitHub API for the latest release. GitHub may log these requests under its own privacy statement.
