Word Hunter is a local-first reader, vocabulary trainer, PDF/OCR workspace, and SRS review tool for learners who want to study from real books, articles, subtitles, and scanned documents.
A reading-to-memory workflow
Do not just collect words. Build a path back to them.
A personal word base is useful when it changes what happens after you close a book. Word Hunter keeps each useful word connected to its sentence, then turns it into an active-recall prompt and schedules another encounter instead of letting it disappear into a notebook.

Read something you care about
Use a book, article, subtitle file, EPUB, or PDF. Meaningful context gives an unknown word a situation, tone, and reason to remember it.

Save the words worth learning
Add a translation, grammatical article, note, image, and the original sentence. Your database becomes a record of your vocabulary, not somebody else's generic list.

Try to recall before revealing
Reader prompts and flashcards ask for the meaning first. Reveal the answer, use the context as feedback, and rate how well you remembered.

Return when the word is due
The SRS queue spaces later reviews. You spend time on words that need attention while better-remembered words wait longer between reviews.
Practice producing the answer
Looking at a translation can feel familiar without proving that you can retrieve it. A recall attempt makes the review diagnostic and gives feedback something to correct.
Review less often, but more deliberately
Due dates distribute practice over time. Word Hunter also waits until at least the next day before a newly learned word becomes an in-reader recall prompt.

Vocabulary imported straight from World of Warcraft quests, editable saved words, a reading-comfort pass, and a much quicker start for large libraries.
Import quest vocabulary
Read the SavedVariables file written by the WordHunterWoW addon. Words arrive with their status, your meaning, your note, and the quest sentence they came from.
Edit the word itself
Correct a headword without losing its learning progress, note, or examples. Imported words also track how many different quests they appeared in, and when.
A quicker start on big libraries
Stored records used to be read and parsed several times per action. On a library of about a thousand records, starting the app roughly halved and saving a book edit did too.
Read-aloud that keeps up
Read-aloud narration keeps the highlighted word in view, dyslexia-friendly fonts ship with the app, and deleting books shows clear progress instead of a silent wait.
Better reverse cards
German separable verbs such as “rief … an” are masked across the example sentence on reverse cards, and a shuffle button re-orders today’s queue at any time.
Gutenberg-first catalog
Discovery covers Project Gutenberg, Wikipedia, and Wikinews. Only Wikisource was dropped, and anything already imported from it stays readable in your library.
Word Hunter 1.1.0 is available now
Choose the Windows installer or portable archive, the macOS Apple Silicon DMG, Word Hunter Pocket on Android, or Flatpak, AppImage, and DEB packages for Linux.
Both Linux packages bundle the local OCR runtime and models; no Syncthing or external sync service is included or required.
Package-manager status: Scoop is available, the official Homebrew tap for Linux x86_64 is available, WinGet is available, an AppImageHub entry is merged but not yet listed in their catalog, and the F-Droid inclusion request is open. The Chocolatey, Snap, AUR, and Nixpkgs recipes are prepared but are not yet published in their respective package stores.
